A Place for Young People to Learn

The Bellmore Fire Department Junior Squad is a place for young people to learn vital life-saving skills while enhancing their self-esteem and a strong sense of teamwork. The BFD trains young men and women between the ages of 14 and 18 in the basics of firefighting and EMS. Drills are held Sunday mornings, as well as some non-school weeknights. Juniors participate in many department activities, including parades and public ceremonies.

Juniors must be 14 years old to join and they must be residents of the Bellmore Fire District. The Junior Squad has been in existence for more than 20 years. Many Junior Squad members go on to become regular volunteer firefighters and chiefs, ensuring a steady supply of new members to fill the ranks. Many also become career firefighters and police officers. The program, overseen by senior firefighter advisors, is also looked upon favorably by colleges during their entry applications process.

If you are interested in an application for your son or daughter, please stop by Bellmore Fire Headquarters (opposite the LIRR Station) on Sunday mornings between 9:00am and 11:30am. Ask for Daniel Donovan.
